Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir is located on the tranquil banks of the Assi River in Varanasi. This famous Hindu temple of India symbolizes faith and devotion and has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. The poet-saint Tulsidas established the Hindu temple, dedicating it to the Hindu God Hanuman.

Once inside, devotees can purchase “besan ke ladoo,” a special sweet, to present to Lord Hanuman as prasad, also known as an offering. Aside from the beautiful historical architecture, devotees will see the idol, Lord Hanuman, positioned to face Lord Rama, reflecting his unyielding and selfless worship of his divine Lord, adorned in stunning marigold flowers.

Goswami Tulisdas is widely regarded as a great thinker. He remains one of the most important figures in Indian culture, especially for his greatest masterpiece, Ramcharitmanas. According to many, Goswami Tulsidas found inspiration for Ramcharitmanas in the tranquil environment of the Mochan Hanuman temple grounds.

The Profound Influence
of Ramcharitmanas

Goswami Tulsidea’s Ramcharitmanas has had a monumental impact on India’s spiritual society. His work has significantly influenced the Bhakti movement, which spread devotion to God throughout India. He was responsible for reshaping Indian spirituality as we know it today, which is deeply rooted in the narrative of Lord Rama.

Through his vivid storytelling, he envisioned a society led by the principles of dharma and devotion. His depiction of Lord Rama as the perfect ruler, Sita as the paragon of virtue, and Hanuman as the model of devotion has provided moral and spiritual direction for generations.

Furthermore, Tulisdas created Ramcharitmanas to communicate the divine story of Lord Rama to the common man. By choosing to translate his work Awadhi, Tulisdas made it possible for everyone, not just scholars, to read and understand Lord Rama's sacred stories and teachings.

Now, Sankat Mochan Mandir is a place of peace and liberation for those seeking divine intervention. Here, worshippers and devotees will find peace, offer prayers, and immerse themselves in the temple’s divine aura. A visit to the temple will also provide guidance and comfort from Lord Hanuman, the “reliever of troubles,’ and “the liberator from difficulties.”

The temple, founded by Goswami Tulsidas, exudes a palpable sense of peace and comfort that devotees still experience today. His spiritual legacy can be felt in the temple's ambiance, which holds historical and cultural significance.

Sankat Mochan Temple
is open to people

After Tulsidas' passing, other spiritual leaders continued his work. To this day, they work to further enrich the temple’s expansive heritage. The work they have already completed has formed the spiritual haven it is today.

Now, devotees can visit the temple for worship and experience the same peace that Tulsidas felt when he established it.
